I recently had the issue that I wanted to upgrade to the latest Windows 11 version for a customer but it didn't work. I just always got a message that it couldn't be installed on a USB disk but it was an SSD.
If you get this maybe the one who installed the OS primarily did an error by mistake or knowingly so he could return and get even some more money...
But I found out what registry key to remove:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control Look for PortableOperatingSystem and if this one is set to 1 set it to 0 or simply delete it

Code

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control] "PortableOperatingSystem"=dword:00000000

You need to restart the installer from scrap at this time or even better reboot the machine first.
If that doesn't help the issue is much more complicate and most of the time it's easier to simply reinstall the machine correctly.
