Introduction

Windows 2000, a pivotal release in the Microsoft Windows NT operating system line, was officially launched on February 17, 2000. As the successor to Windows NT 4.0, it was tailored for business use, offering enhanced language support and improved accessibility features.

Key innovations in Windows 2000 included the NTFS 3.0 file system, the Encrypting File System for enhanced security, and support for both basic and dynamic disk storage. It also introduced Active Directory, a crucial directory service for business environments.

Praised for its stability and reliability, Windows 2000 stood out compared to its predecessors and the consumer-focused Windows Me. However, it faced challenges, notably becoming a target for significant virus attacks like Code Red and Nimda, which raised concerns about its security despite being marketed as the most secure Windows version at the time.
