Koken – Insert slideshows

Slideshows are one of the available options when inserting media into an essay or page. This tutorial will explain how slideshows are added, edited and published in essays and pages.

Publishing slideshows

We’ll start by walking through the process of inserting a slideshow into an essay or page. Begin by clicking “Text” in the console’s main navigation. Next, click the plus button at bottom left to create a new essay/page, or click on an essay/page in the middle column to edit an existing one.

Insert slideshow

When your essay or page is open in the rich text editor, click inside the text to insert a cursor, then press return. This will create an empty space for you to insert media. Click inside the empty space and a menu will appear containing a slideshow option (circled below).

The Insert slideshow sheet will appear and display all available options for your slideshow.

Using a public album

A list of all public albums will be displayed in the sheet. Click Use next to the album you want and a slideshow of its content will be used.

Using individual images

To embed a slideshow of individual images, not an entire album, add images to Quick collection or Favorites at the top of the Library’s left column. After doing so the sheet will display these as options at the top, along with Last import which contains your most recently imported content (see below).

Note that when assigning individual images through these three options the slideshow will use the images that are currently there and not update if Quick collection, Favorites or Last import changes thereafter.

Your essay/page will then include a slideshow element in the rich text editor. For a quick preview of what the slideshow will look like, click on its title as illustrated below.

Edit slideshow options

Additional edits may be made to your inserted slideshow by clicking the gear button at the far right of the slideshow element. A sheet will appear displaying the slideshow source plus two editable options: “Caption” and “Click action”.

To change the source of the slideshow, hover over the collection title (“Bokeh” in the example above), then click the “edit” link that appears to its right. The initial “Insert slideshow” sheet will open again for you to select a different source.

“Caption” is set to “Do not show” by default, which means that only the slideshow itself will be visible. You may edit this to “Show title only”, “Show caption only”, or “Show title and caption”. Choosing these will display the title and/or caption (as assigned in the Library) for the current image underneath the slideshow in the published essay/page. How the title and caption are styled in the published essay/page is dependent on your chosen site theme.

“Click action” defines what happens if someone clicks or taps on any image in the slideshow. The default setting is “Use theme setting”, which means the action is defined by your site theme (more on that in a minute). You may edit this to toggle playback, view content in the lightbox, view the content page for the current image, or view the album page for the album being displayed.

Preview slideshow

With your slideshow inserted and configured the way you want, click the “view” link under the url displayed in the right Inspector column (see below). A new browser window will open displaying either the essay or page template provided by your site theme

When finished, click the Publish button at the bottom of the Inspector panel to take your essay/page live.

Styling slideshows

The appearance of slideshows inserted into essays and pages is edited through Site. You may alter slideshow dimensions, transition style, playback behavior, and other options. Check out the Style slideshows tutorial to learn how.
